Landskroon Wine Estate is on the Southeast facing slopes of the majestic Paarl Mountain in the Paarl Wine Appellation. Owned and managed by the de Villiers family for 5 generations, each Cellarmaster named Paul, the Estate continues to produce fine wines. The Landskroon Cape Vintage Port style wine is central to the Estate’s production and a wine which won for Paul de Villiers V the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award.
The grapes for this wine were harvested off the estate and taken to the cellar where they are destemmed and taken to open top fermenters until fermented dry. Once pressed the wine was taken to a mix of 2nd and 3rd fill French and American Oak Barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The livery is new to the Estate and is very striking and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a deep plum colour at the heart and pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of dark berries and plums. The oak and its concomitant spice, vanilla and smoke are present on the palate as well. From entry the wine is fullish in body, there is generosity on the palate. And the balance of fruit, oak, acidity, and tannins is harmonious. Very pleasing glass and will be more so after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Landskroon Shiraz 2019 is a perfect sipping wine while you wait for your braai coals to reach temperature. Good with the meats off your braai, a winter warming casserole. I know that many people don’t like Liver, but if you love it, nothing holds you back when it’s on offer. Nina Timm’s Fried Liver with Rich Onion Gravy hits the spot. Click HERE for her recipe.
