Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This week has seen International Cabernet Sauvignon Day. Cabernet Sauvignon is a crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, which happened in the vineyards of Bordeaux a few hundred years ago. Now the vines are planted in almost every wine region in the world and Cabernet Sauvignon is acknowledged as a producer of premium grapes for fine wine. Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is one of the finer examples of Cabernet, coming from the south east facing slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain and facing towards, and indeed in sight of, Table Mountain. The fifth generation of the de Villiers now owns and manages the estate with Paul de Villiers as Cellarmaster [all 5 called Paul, his brother and cousins providing vineyard, administration and sales functions.

The grapes for the Landskroon Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 come from the Estate and are handpicked by Hugo de Villiers and his team and brought to the Cellar where Paul de Villiers and winemaker Michiel du Toit received and destalked the bunches. The mash was taken to open top fermenting tanks and fermented under controlled conditions with regular punch downs to extract colour and gentle tannins. After pressing, a 12-month period in French Oak barrels matured the wine. 5% of the barrels are new, while the remainder were 2nd 3rd and 4th fill barrels. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under natural cork in a Bordeaux shaped bottle with the elegant Anthony Lane designed label. In the glass, it is a dark bloodplum at the core which pales out to a youthful purple garnet edge.

It smells like
Blackcurrants, Crème de Cassis, and a supportive whiff of oak.

It tastes like
Full bodied berries and plums from entry, which swirl to fill the mid palate and continues right through the long and elegant aftertaste. The tannins are cashmere soft. Oak and its concomitant spices in support of the fruit.
