Delaire Graff Estate Banghoek Reserve Merlot 2018, so good on a cold Winter’s night with My Tomato Bredie…

Delaire Graff Estate Banghoek Reserve Merlot 2018

The Delaire Graff Wine Estate was recently chosen as 14th in the world by The World’s Best Vineyards. In the ‘at a glance’ section, the website says, “Flawless views across the Banghoek Valley; flavour-packed Asian tapas at Indochine restaurant.” There is mention of Morné Vrey the Estate’s Award-Winning Winemaker. Morné and his assistants Rian Schemper and Bethwell Sombhuza make the most sublime wines. No mention of the superb Delaire Graff Restaurant – pity.

The harvest of 2018 from the Estate’s oldest single vineyards was a small one in the face of the drought. Cooler ripening weather however produced berries with intense flavour and colour. Merlot is taken very seriously in the Delaire Graff Cellar. Careful sorting takes place before the berries go through to the winemaking process. Grapes were destemmed, though not crushed, punch downs took place regularly during fermentation. Taken to French Oak Barrels, of which 80% were new, for 16 months maturation.

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is classic Delaire Graff, elegant and very simple. In the glass, at the heart it is a deep blood plum which pales out to ruby at the rim. I have not had the chance to taste this wine, though Morné says of it, “Firm and well balanced, this Merlot is characterised by spicy, dark plum and berry flavours, whilst silky, ripe tannins ensure a long and lingering finish.
