Delaire Graff Cabernet Franc Rosé 2019

Having visited The Delaire Graff Wine Estate in the middle of December, I was again so impressed by what an amazing destination it is. A world class experience. We were fortunate, being website partners to have a tasting with Riaan Schemper, Assistant to Morné Vrey the Estate’s much awarded Wine Maker. Lunch followed in the Delaire Graff Restaurant with its spectacular view. And its sublime food. Do put it on your bucket list if you live in the Cape or are there on holiday.

The grapes for the Delaire Graff Cabernet Franc Rosé 2019 come from selected Cabernet Franc vineyards on Helshoogte and the Helderberg Mountain. This was the first harvest after the breaking of the drought and weather fluctuations during bud break and flowering resulted in uneven bunches and smaller berries. Smaller berries can make for more flavour and colour in a red wine. The grapes were hand harvested and then taken to the cellar for destalking and gentle pressing to prevent too much colour leeching into the juice. The process from now on in the cellar is the same as a fine dry white wine, like the Delaire Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is then prepared for bottling.

From a clear glass Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a red topped silver screw cap. The label is classical elegant simple Delaire Graff style. The aromas are of red berries, raspberry spun sugar and an undertow of blackcurrant. Cabernet Franc is one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon which also shows Crème de Cassis in the background. The palate is full and generous, especially in the mid palate, and the wine is deliciously refreshing crisp and dry.

The Delaire Graff Cabernet Franc Rosé 2019 is a perfect match for many dishes in the Estate’s two Restaurants, The Delaire Graff and Indochine. At home, it is good as a glass to lift you up in the middle of the morning, or with a delicious al fresco lunch or watching the sun go down.
