Top drops #4 De Grendel Three Spades Cider
We are blessed with great wines, great winemakers, great places, and fabulous restaurants in our Cape Winelands. Recently I had the opportunity to taste this sublime cider made on the De Grendel Wine Estate. Here are some sensory notes.
De Grendel Owner, Sir de Villiers Graaff & Charles Hopkins, Founding Winemaker & Cider Brewer
Pour
From a 330ml tear drop shaped brown glass bottle, closed with a screw cap. In the glass, it is a rich gold with bubbles rushing to the surface. The aromas are obviously of apple, the blend of which is 30% Golden Delicious, 30% Granny Smith, 20% Pink Lady, 10% Braeburn and 10% Fuji. It is delicately flavoured, crisp and refreshing with the most beguiling of apple flavours on the generous palate and in the long aftertaste.
Pair
The De Grendel Three Spades Cider is a delicious drink on its own – chill it well. It is excellent with food, so good with a delicately flavoured French chicken casserole with fresh tarragon, perfect with big brown mushrooms braaied on a skewer and basted with lime and olive oil and Pesto Princess Basil & Lemon Pesto.
