A recent visit to the Cape included a visit to The Old Road Wine Company headquarters in sight of the Franschhoek Cellar where its sublime wines are made by Ryan Puttick. He popped over to say hello which was very special as he is up to his eyeballs in grapes coming in from their own vineyards in Franschhoek and other grape suppliers.
The HQ is situated on the right just as you enter the town of Franschhoek from the western end. The building has been beautifully redesigned and includes The Fat Man Restaurant, an enchanting wine tasting and sales Cellar Door, and The Farmyard, used for outdoor functions.
The day was perfection. Clouds pouring down the mountains against a blue sky with vineyards in the foreground. The Franschhoek Tram travels up and down the Valley more regularly than I thought. The electric tram dropped passengers off who came in for a taste and left with a couple of bottles.
We were fortunate to be served by Tanaka Mujuru, a fine, knowledge, wine articulate young man with a beguiling smile. He certainly knows the wines well, what I like was that he used words and expressions which were different and explicit.
We lunched, excellent vegetable spring rolls with a pineapple beer dipping sauce which I followed with a piled up and delicious zooped up Waldorf Salad, went down very well with. Glass of The Old Road Wine Company’s Juliette Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes from cool climate Elgin and the aromas and flavours leaning towards tropical fruits, fresh and crisp.
If you live near Franschhoek, or on holiday in the region, put this on the top of your bucket list for a truly great wine experience.
