My Top Drop #20, Delaire Graff Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Morné Vrey produces a variety of Sauvignon Blancs from the Estate’s own grapes and some from other premium wine areas where they have producers. The grapes for this wine come from four different wine appellations, Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Darling and Franschhoek. 2019 was the first vintage after the worst drought in living memory.  The fluctuating weather conditions at bud break and flowering meant uneven bunches and smaller berries. The smaller berries of course mean a higher skin to juice ratio and thus greater flavour. White wines in this vintage showed good acidity and harmony. 92% of this wine is made up of Sauvignon Blanc and the balance is Semillon.

Once in the cellar the grapes for the Top Drop #20 Delaire Graff Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2019 are destalked and given a short partial skin contact. Once gently pressed the Sauvignon Blanc was taken to stainless steel tanks for fermentation, while the Semillon was fermented in new French oak barrels for three weeks and was left on its lees for 5 months. This adds complexity, mouthfeel and body to the final wine. The two wines were blended and prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is classical, simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw. The aromas are a mélange of tropical fruit, mango, melon and crushed fynbos herbaceousness. The palate is vibrant from entry, full and complex and a fruit salad of tropical fruits. Lovely thread of acidity running through from entry to the long and gently waning aftertaste. This wine will reward of cool cellared for a year or two. An awesome glass.

The Delaire Graff Coastal Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is a delicious wine by the glass. It is a perfect food partner. Excellent with sushi, sashimi and ceviche.
