The first red wine bottled in 1970 by Frans Malan, founder of the Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, was a Pinotage. Today his sons, owners of the estate, Francois, the Vineyardist and Johan, Production Director, are still producing Pinotage, though with modern vineyard and cellar techniques, the 2018 Pinotage is a superb wine.
This year the Estate celebrates the 50th year since its first Cap Classique in South Africa was launched. Kaapse Vonkel is now part of the history of the South African Wine Industry.
