Oldenburg Vineyards Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Oldenburg Vineyards is situated in the Banghoek Valley in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. The East facing side of the iconic Simonsberg is notable cooler than vineyards on the West facing side of the mountain. Cooler vineyards mean a longer hang time to ripeness, therefore greater colour and flavour. The Estate practices minimal intervention on the vineyards which reflects the full potential of these magnificent vineyards. The 8 different natural elements found on the estate are reflected on the quirky label.

Once hand harvested, the grapes are taken to the cellar where Nic van Aarde, the Estate’s Winemaker, and his team destalk and crush to the grape. There is a 3 day cold soak before fermentation, during which pump overs took place three times a day. After gentle pressing, the wine was racked to 300 litre French Oak Barrels, half of them new, for 19 months maturation. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. In the glass, the wine is a deep dark bloodplum which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are alive and typical of a fine Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackcurrants, plums, cherry tobacco and the supportive oak with its concomitant brown spices and vanilla. The palate, from entry has a fine line of raspberry acidity going through to the long aftertaste. Rich and generous, complex and textured, country lane fruits feature, brambles, forest berries and notes of aromatic white tropical flowers. A serious wine, with beautifully applied oak and fine tannins. A truly impressive glass, eminently drinkable now, though will reward with a couple of years of cool cellaring, anything up to ten years after harvest.

The Oldenburg Vineyards Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is absolutely made for food, though would be so good as a glass after a good meal, perhaps with some snappy dark chocolate.
