Landskroon Wine Estate in the Paarl Wine Appellation has been owned and managed by the de Villiers family for 5 generations. Each family winemaker since they settled on the estate has been named Paul. Facing South East on the slopes of the iconic mountain, Paul is producing some excellent wines. He is an awardee of The Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for his Port style wines.
Pinotage, of course, is a truly South African grape having been created by Professor Abraham Perold in the 1920s. The first Pinotage Wines was made in 1942 by a friend of Perold’s, Professor Charl Theron de Waal. At the time there were sufficient bunches to fill one barrel of wine. Perold died later that year and never tasted the wine.
One of the awarded wines from the Estate, The Landskroon Pinotage of the 2018 vintage was made during the final summer of the worst drought in living memory. Bunches and berries were small and the flavour and colour were exceptional.
Once in the cellar, the grapes were destalked and crushed and the taken to both open top and closed stainless steel fermentation tanks. Juice and skins fermented at controlled temperatures. After fermentation the wine was racked to both French and American oak barrels in a mix of new, 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. Here the wine spent a year before being prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is of the estate’s truly elegant new design, very fitting for the stature of the wine. In the glass, the wine is a dark bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are as expected those of ripe Agen prune plums and red berry fruits. From entry the wine has a thread of raspberry acidity running through to the long and gently waning aftertaste. The palate, while medium of weight, is soft, rich and generous with the plums, and berries and has an undertow of oak spice and vanilla and well-integrated tannins. While eminently drinkable now, the wine will reward after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Landskroon Pinotage 2018 is a classical Pinotage. Good for drinking, chilled, while you watch the braai coals get to temperature. As a food wine, it is good with duck, guinea fowl or Coq au Vin.
