Summercourt is a property adjoining the Delaire Graff vineyards up at the top of the Banghoek Valley, one of the cooler parts of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Managed by Kallie Fernhout, the Delaire Graff Vineyards [click here], the grapes, hand-picked early in the morning, are brought in to Winemaker Morné Vrey and his team for vinification.
Once in the cellar, the grapes are whole bunch pressed and the juice taken to stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Halfway through the fermentation, the juice was taken to 3rd and 4th fill French oak barrels. Here the fermentation was completed, and the wine remained in barrel for two months, regularly stirred. It was then taken to stainless steel tanks where it matured on its primary lees for six months for further maturation. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is simple elegant, classical Delaire Graff. In the glass, the wine is a pale gold straw and gem bright. The aromas are of sweet tropical limes, ripe white fleshed peaches and fynbos honey. The palate is rich and sappy. A fine line of fruit acidity and minerality run through from entry through the generous mid palate into the long and gently waning and very harmonious aftertaste.
The Delaire Graff Summercourt Chardonnay 2019 is a serious wine, no quaffer this, it is an ideal food partner. Sadly, due to lockdown, both the Delaire Graff Restaurants are closed. They have dishes which are perfect compliments to this wine. Nina Timm’s Crispiest Sesame Chicken Strips are a great partner, be it for an Autumnal lunch under a pergola or a midweek supper.
