The De Wetshof family has owned and managed the De Wetshof Wine Estate in the beautiful Robertson Wine Appellation for many years. I have known them through four generation. Gracious, dignified, generous with their emotions when it comes to friends, and very particular about the quality of wines they produce.
They are true Chardonnay specialists, though fortunately for us, they excel at other varieties, like this one, Riesling. Jancis Robinson, well know British Wine Writer refers to Riesling as the finest white wine grape in the world. And so it is for me.
Once in the cellar the grapes are destemmed and crushed and the juice allowed to settle. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was racked off the gross lees and allowed to stay on the fine lees to develop greater flavour. It was then prepared for bottling.
from a bottle called an Alsatian Flute, closed with a silver screw cap. The label is classic De Wetshof, simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw with some lime green flashes. The aromas are of ripe fruit, grapefruit and a small river stone minerality. They segue into the palate which has a brilliant acidity which defies description though so typical of Riesling, soft and round, though determined. Fabulous fruit. Subtle spice and benign turpene undertow.
The De Wetshof Riesling 2017 is a fine sipping wine. It is an utterly fabulous wine as a partner to food. Pasta with a creamy sauce, veal or pork dishes, sushi or a delicate green Eastern curry are perfect partners. Diane Bibby’s Chicken and Tarragon Cream Pasta is the perfect partner.
