De Wetshof Estate Lilya Dry Rosé 2021

De Wetshof Wine Estate is a third-generation family Estate in the Robertson Wine Appellation. Here the De Wet Family has farmed and made wine for 150 years. While the Estate’s speciality is Chardonnay, they certainly have fine plantings of other noble varieties from which Peter de Wet, the family Winemaker, makes some superb wines.

The next generation, Lilya & Daniel

One of these is the De Wetshof Estate Lilya Dry Rosé 2021, named for the youngest member of the De Wet family, Lilya, daughter of CEO Johann de Wet and his wife Gera.

Cabernet Franc grapes ripening on the vine

Cabernet Franc, from which the De Wetshof Lilya Dry Rosé 2021, is made, is one of my favourite red wine varieties, and of course, a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. Once harvested before dawn and before the Summer heat rises in the vineyards, the grapes are taken to the cellar where they are destalked and then gently pressed. The juice then settles overnight before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then prepared for bottling.

From a burgundy shaped bottle and closed with a screw cap. The label is feminine, simple, and elegant. In the glass, the wine is an onion skin tinged coral pink. The aromas are floral, berried and have an undertow of plums. The palate is full, delicate with a lovely fresh line of acidity supporting the raspberry, pomegranate aril, and fresh white nectarines. The aftertaste is a gently waning one with the characteristic Cabernet Franc spice and herbaceousness. The most perfect glass for summer.

Tuna Tataki,  Tuna with Sesame Seeds

The De Wetshof Estate Lilya Rose 2021 is a perfect refreshing Summer sipper. It is perfect with a Tuna Tataki, lightly seared and seasoned with sesame seeds, wasabi and lime and served with strips of carrot and courgette with slices of spring onion.
