Wine + Food, The Art of the Perfect Pairing

A visit to the Durbanville Hills Winery, for me, is always such a pleasure. I have time to meet the formidable Martin Moore, Founding Cellarmaster and a veteran of some 22 vintages. And members of his team. In February this year, I was there and had lunch with Martin. We were joined by one of my favourite winemakers Wilhelm Coetzee. Wilhelm is the red wine specialist at Durbanville Hills. We had the opportunity to taste through some of the ‘about-to-be-released’ red wines which was huge fun. Kobus Gerber, the Winery’s white wine specialist was dealing with an avalanche of white grapes arriving at the cellar that day from the 9 wine grape producers who supply the grapes for the Durbanville Hills Wines.

We were fortunate to taste Kobus’s 2019 Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc which fast became one of my favourites in the early part of the year. Since moving to Johannesburg over two years ago, I understand more and more the love of Sauvignon Blanc on the Highveld. In this dry climate, something brisk and fresh is always pleasing.
