I have known Nicky Barber for a number of years. She has lived in Shanghai where she ran a food website and in the UK. Fortunately for us, she is back in South Africa and doing some great work on her website, https://mydeliciousmonster.com. I am not able to see a Monstera Deliciosa without thinking of her.
I love her innovative recipes. She has a newsletter to which you can subscribe. The Fig & Cherry Cakelette which appeared on her website recently caught my eye. She had me at fig, actually. And with figs in season now, very appropriate timing.
Of this enchanting cake, Nicky says. “Baking is like therapy for me. The entire act from start to finish brings me an insane amount of joy. When I feel the need for a baking session to clear my head, it’s what comes after that which deters me from starting in the first place. This is where small-batch baking and the concept of a cakelette both come in to save the day.

The perfect wine to serve your partner on Valentine’s Day. And fun with Nicky’s Fig & Cherry Cakelette. Pour, from a clear glass Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The livery is the Estate’s new label. In the glass, the wine is the most beautiful delicate pink coral colour. The aromas are reminiscent of pink flowers, pink honeysuckle and the delicious flavour for which Pinotage is known. Soft cherries, red berries predominate on the palate which has a lovely line of raspberry acidity running through it into the long aftertaste. A perfect wine for summer and Valentine’s Day.
