We are blessed with great wines, great winemakers, great places, fabulous restaurants and family friendly places in our Cape Winelands. Recently I have had the opportunity to taste some sublime wines made by Boela Gerber, award winning Winemaker at the historic Groot Constantia Wine Estate. This one remains one of my perennial favourites.
This is the premier white wine from this 330 plus year old winery. A wooded Bordeaux style white blend led by Semillon with 25% Sauvignon Blanc. A wine of great dignity.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The bottle has the word Constantia embossed on the neck meaning that the grapes used come from the Constantia Wine Appellation. In the glass is has the richness of colour one would expect from a wine which has been matured in 50% new oak barrels, with the remainder made up of 25% second fill and 25% third and fourth fill French oak barrels. The aromas which are followed on the full palate are of ripe white fleshed peaches and pears, and an almost whistful whisper of elderflower – a flavour of which I am very fond. There is the almost expected mushy peas and asparagus floating around in the background. Lovely well weighted complex, built-up-in-layers palate with perfect harmony between all the elements.
The Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve 2017 is is no quaffer, this is a serious wine, and made for a well-prepared dish. It has enough oomph to tackle quite full flavours like seared tuna with a delicious dipping sauce, a pork chop with a rich fruity sauce or chicken feta and spinach sausages. Excellent with a medium soft cheese like the Dalewood Fromage Boland at the end of a meal.
