The Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2020 vintage has been awarded a Gold medal at the 28th annual Mundus Vini Grand International Spring Tasting in Neustadt, Germany. Mundus Vini, a German based International Wine Competition has been tasting and scoring wines for over 20 years and has become a very credible industry leader in benchmarking outstanding wines from all over the wine world. With over 12, 000 wines entered this year and judged by more than 300 highly qualified international jury members, comprising of oenologists, wine traders and sommeliers, receiving this acclaim is an incredible achievement for the Douglas Green Cellar.

Chenin Blanc, the most widely planted varietal in South Africa, has a long and somewhat tumultuous history, but is fast becoming a superstar varietal for South Africa with some of the world’s finest expressions produced here, and to have The Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2020 sitting amongst them is testament to the continued dedication and consistent wine making practices in the Douglas Green Cellar. The Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2020 is produced from specially selected sites, allowing Winemaker, Jaco Potgieter and his team, to produce a wine that best express this style of Chenin Blanc.

Winemaker, Jaco Potgieter, says “It’s phenomenal to see these kinds of results from such a reputable International Wine competition. We have invested a great deal of effort and energy into identifying the right growers and vineyards for the style we want to make. A clean, bright style with lots of fruit and expressive varietal character. Receiving this award is both an achievement for Douglas Green and our growers.

In terms of the vintage, we had high hopes for 2020. Good winter rains in 2019 was followed by a long, warm ripening season which produced some exceptional fruit.

This Chenin Blanc was made without oak, but extended lees contact gives the wine a fantastic mouthfeel and texture. The wine expresses fresh tropical fruit and bright acidity and is the perfect wine to enjoy with friends and family around the dinner table’’.
