De Wetshof Riesling 2017
The De Wet Family of DeWetshof in the Robertson Wine Appellation is one of Chardonnay specialists. However, Peter de Wet, the family winemaker is no slouch with other varieties of which he produces superb examples. And the De Wetshof Riesling 2017 is one of them. Jancis Robinson, the well-known British Wine Writer calls Riesling, something like the greatest white wine grape in the world. I tend to agree, as there are many Rieslings in my memory which have been truly great wines.
Riesling grapes ripening on the vine
Harvested at dawn from a single vineyard of 1.53 hectares in size, and once in the cellar they bunches are destemmed, and the grapes pressed. The juice which runs off is allowed to cool settle overnight and then taken to stainless steel tanks for cool controlled fermentation. Once complete the wine is taken off the gross lees and then allowed to mature on its fine lees. Once further complexity is obtained, the wine is prepared for bottling.

Pour
From an Alsatian Flute shaped bottle, closed with a screwcap. The label is simple and elegant De Wetshof style. In the glass, the wine Is a pale hay colour. The aromas and palate really segue on into the other. Aromatic sumptuous fruit with superb minerality and a lovely benign terpene flavours with a waxy feel on the tongue. Sappy long aftertaste. I really can’t get enough of this magical wine.

A roasted cauliflower and onion curry. A salad of Rocket, Apple, Prosciutto with a Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil dressing. All are excellent partners.
