When Stellenview Premium Wines founder, winemaker and entrepreneur, Reino Kruger and his wife Grethe established the brand in 2009 (primarily for export markets to the Far East) it made perfect sense to pay homage to his family with one of his ranges, The Kruger Family Reserve Wines. The first Kruger Family history in South Africa dates back to the early 1700’s with the first Kruger settlers to South Africa. The packaging and livery of these bottles is excellent. Heavy bottle and an elegant simple labels.
Racking up the awards, the Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, scored 90 points at the 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards. It was also awarded a Gold at the 2020 Michelangelo Awards. In 2019 the same vintage was awarded the titles of Best Overall Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Overall Red Wine, respectively, at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Awards. Now sold out, so stock up on the 2018.
From a heavy Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant on a black background. The word Stellenbosch is embossed in the glass just below the neck. This wine needs no bush. A deep bloodplum in colour in the glass, which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of crème de cassis, blueberries, and the expected vanilla and sweet spice from the oak. The nose segues into the palate which is rich and generous. Fine tannins, excellent acidity and the fabulous fruit carry through in to a long and gentle waning aftertaste.
The Kruger Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is made for serious food. It would be a welcome guest at a tradition Sunday Roast Lunch with a tranche of beef, real gravy and traditional accompaniments – rustly roast potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding.
This is a bold and beautiful Chardonnay. Reino shows how serious he is by fermenting the wine in first fill medium toast, fine grained French Oak Barrels.
From a heavy Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The word Stellenbosch is embossed in the glass just below the neck. The livery is an elegant label, printed o a white background. In the glass, the wine is hay coloured. The aromas are of windfall oranges, buttered toast and flint like sedimentary stone. The palate has a lovely line of sweet tropical lime acidity running through a rich and gorgeous mid palate into the lingering aftertaste. Medium plus of body, drink it only slightly chilled.
The Kruger Family Reserve Chardonnay 2017 is a serious food wine. Good with a buttery roast organic chicken. Or a game fish, like Yellowtail simply pan fried in butter with lemon and parsley. The Dalewood Fromage 6 month matured Huguenot is the perfect cheese for both of these wines.
