Welbedacht Wine Estate is in The Wellington Wine Appellation. Some of their wines are registered as Single Vineyard Wines and these have provided me with such pleasure in the drinking. I think the quality to price ratio is high in all of these. And I wanted you to know how well worth while they are.
Name thus as the vineyard is next to an old Schoolhouse. Planted to Chenin Blanc, its former name was Steen. For me, this wine says everything it needs to say to pronounce it a fine Chenin Blanc. Lovely colour in the glass, light straw colour with some flashes of lime green when held up to the light. Big nose packed with Chenin aromas, Granny Smith Apples, granadillas, melon, and a lovely line of citrus. These all segue on to the palate, which is rich and generous, crisp, and long. Perfect food wine, it also does very well with cheese. The vineyard is 35 years old, so a venerable old lady.
Bakleiblok means ‘fighting block’ fisticuffs broke out here amongst the workers as to which team provided the finest grapes to the Cellar. Again, from a single vineyard, 32 years old. Classic Cinsault. In the glass a fine red cherry colour and quite translucent which adds so much to the expected pleasure you derive from this wine. Sweet ripe cherry and berry fruits appear in the aromas and on the palate. One of my favourite grapes, my father had a large block on our family farm, so I am easily beguiled. So easy to drink, utterly delicious when chilled and excellent as a food wine. So good with duck or guinea fowl if you are lucky enough to get the latter.
Viognier is a grape that is relatively new on the block. In the glass, the wine is a good lemony straw in colour. Having been barrel fermented, the fabulous fruit is well supported by the oak allowing it to shine. Interesting nose of fresh split apricots, pear and melon. From entry there is a fine line of acid going into the long aftertaste. The palate has an interesting mid section which is quite mineral. If is full and generous. Great mouthful of wine. Quit dry, it is a great food wine which will go well with Mushroom Risotto or a slice of hard cheese like the Dalewood Fromage Simond…
