Spier Wine Farm is the ultimate tourist destination in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. The Estate offers not only a range of very exciting wines, great food at the Vadas Smokehouse, an Eagle Encounter, Segway Rides through the vineyards, a comfortable night’s sleep in the Spier Hotel, and and and.
The Spier Creative Block 3 is a Rhone Style blend of Shiraz accented by splashes of Mourvèdre and Viognier. The grapes come from the Groenekloof (Darling) and Stellenbosch Wine Appellations. The grapes were harvested by hand and once in the cellar were destalked and taken, each variety kept separate, to stainless-steel tanks for a two week fermentation. The free run wine was then taken to barrel for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The oak regime was 90% French and 10% American oak 300L barrels half of which were first fill and the balance second fill, for 16 months.
The Spier Creative Block 3 2018 is packed in a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass the wine is a rich bloodplum colour in the heart which pales out at the edges. The aromas are of country lane fruits like Black Cherries, mulberries and brambles. There is an undertow of roadside fennel seeds crushed in your palm. The palate has an attractive acidity line which runs from entry through a rich and generous well fruited palate where silken tannins are found, into a long and gently waning aftertaste. A truly impressive glass. A wine which will improve and reward after a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Spier Creative Block 3 2018 is an excellent sipper when a bottle of fine wine is wanted. However, it is as a food partner that it excels. On the Estate, there is the Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery, and here PJ & Tara Vadas produce fabulous cuts of smoked brisket of beef and other deliciosities.
