Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2021

Simonsig Wine Estate in Koelenhof, in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation was one of he early wine estates to bottle its own wine. The founder, Frans Malan, bottles his first white wine on the Estate in 1968 and it was Chenin Blanc. This grape is the most planted wine grape in South Africa and with 6 times the plantings of the Loire Valley, we have the largest plantings in the world.

Today, Frans and Liza’s sons, Francois, the Vineyardist and Johan, responsible for the wine production have taken the dream further with plantings on better sites and soils, and of course modern wine making techniques. When ready the grapes for the Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2021 were handpicked and taken to the cellar where they are crushed. The juice is run off immediately, though some components are allowed overnight skin contact. Overnight cool settling means clear juice which is taken to stainless steel tanks and inoculated with selected yeast strains well known for producing very fruity wines. Once fermented dry, the wine is prepared for bottling.

The wine is packed in a beautiful bespoke bottle with the family crest embossed in glass above the simple elegant label. The bottle is the shape of an Alsatian Flute and is closed with a screw cap. In the glass, the wine is a pale hay colour with flashes of lime green when held up to the light. The aromas and palate segue from one to the other. Pear, Granny Smith Apple, granadilla ad tropical fruits like desiccated pineapple, Madeira Melon are joined by a refreshing, rich and generous palate with a lovely limey lemony grapefruity acidity line going well into the very satisfying aftertaste. An impressive glass and a perfect Summer wine.

Kob Ceviche, buchu, lime, pine nuts

The Simonsig Chenin Blanc 2021 is the perfect late morning refresher or for sipping at sundown. Excellent partner to Oriental dishes, like sushi and sashimi, so good with ceviche and a gentle Kerala Curry. I can’t praise this wine enough, a great story behind it, excellent care in the vineyard and brilliant elevation in the cellar.
