Landskroon Shiraz 2015

Landskroon sits on the slopes of the iconic Paarl Mountain, so named because the three large rocks on the top shine like pearls in the sun after rain. The South-Western slope face towards Cape Town.

Since the family bought the farm some 5 generations ago, the Cellar Master, usually the head of the family, has been named Paul. When I asked the current Paul who he would like as Dinner guests, he said the former Pauls so that he could earn about their winemaking on the Estate.

The grapes for the Landskroon Shiraz 2015 are all Paarl Wine Appellation grapes.  Once harvested they are taken to the cellar where they are destemmed and crushed. They are taken to open top fermenters where the skins and the juice are inoculated with a special yeast and then the wine is cool fermented until dry. Pressing then took place and the young wine was taken to a mix of American and French Oak barrels, some 2nd fill and some 3rd fill. After 18 months of maturation, the wine was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled with a natural cork closure in a Bordeaux bottle. In the glass, it is a gem bright opaque plum ruby at the core which pales out to garnet at the rim.

It smells like
Ripe bloodplums and roadside brambles. Undertow of oak and its concomitant spices and vanilla.

It tastes like
Blast of generous red fruit on entry. Grind of white pepper. Medium to full bodied with a plush mid palate. Good satisfying ending. Will happily mature under correct cellar conditions for up to 6 years from harvest and offer delayed pleasure.

It’s good with
Chill the wine for about 30 minutes before service, this will add greatly to the pleasure of the drinking.  While it is more than suitable as a glass on its own, it shines with food.  North African dishes flavoured with Ras el Hanout, South African Dishes flavoured with fruity Cape Malay Curry spices, sappy sausages of the Italian or boerewors persuasion and of course hearty vegetarian main course with aubergine, mushrooms and tomato.
