Groot Constantia is one of the oldest wine estates in the Cape, having been granted in 1685 to former Governor Simon van der Stel. Since then, the Estate has created such an aura about it, such amazing history and a range of superb wines. Grapes from Floricious Beukes and his team in the vineyards, to Boela Gerber, the Estate’s award-winning Winemaker. Floricius, Boela told me, has made such a difference in the vineyards with his discreet management, thus upping the quality of the grapes. Vineyard actions like pruning, canopy management and harvesting are done by hand. Pest control is done biologically, and soil health and weed control are managed by a selected mix of winter cover crop. Climatically Groot Constantia has a cool climate with cold breezes blowing over the Constantia Mountain from the cold Benguela current which runs up our West Coast from the deep cold Southern oceans. The soils vary from deep red, granite-based clay soil to red-brown loamy soil from granitic origin.
After harvesting the grapes are destalked and crushed and the juice is allowed minimum contact with the skins to prevent too much colour being taken up, Cool fermentation follows and once dry, the wine is left on the lees for 2 months and then prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is classic Groot Constantia in the French Chateau style with an etching of the Manor House on it. The Blend is Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to add to the freshness. In the glass, the wine us gem bright, the colour of a pink diamond. The aromas are broad with berry fruits, melon and jasmine flowers. The aromas segue into the palate which is fresh from entry. Full and rich and zippy, rich red berries, the ‘heaviness’ of melon and it just sparkles through the long and dry aftertaste. So ready for now drinking, Chill it well.
The Groot Constantia Rosé 2020 is an any time wine. Perfect as a mid-morning refresher, sundown sipper, as an aperitif at the beginning of a meal.
