Flagstone Tributary Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2016

Gerhard Swart, the Winemaker at Flagstone Wines, is producing some fine drops. Under the hand of Bruce Jack, they aim to produce wines which respect our 350-year-old winemaking heritage.  They make wines which not only please the senses, but also stimulate fine thoughts.

The Winemaker writes “Imagine starting at the sea, where a big river runs into the surf. You explore upstream looking for the source, the reason. A carefully crafted wine is a bit like a river. It is born of many influences, many tributaries.” This wine honours that philosophy because a balanced, delicious wine is always the result of many convergent energies; the weather, geography and the winemaker being just one of them. It is how they come together that counts.

The Flagstone Tributary Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2016 is a fine expression of its component parts.

Chenin Blanc on the vine

It looks like
Bottled under screw cap in a Bordeaux shaped bottle. The Flagstone labels are always slightly quirky and do a great job of description. Bruce Jack once told me you need a name

[Flagstone] a nickname [Tributary] and then what it is [Chenin Blanc]. In the glass, a gem bright golden straw with lime green flashes.

It smells like
The classical Chenin notes. Fresh white fleshed peach and sun dried soft apricots and pear.

It tastes like
Full and round from entry to the long ending. Luscious tropical fruits, melon, white peaches, undertow of vanilla. Excellent harmony of acidity, fruit and aftertaste. Flagstone Wines are made for food.

It’s good with
This is a good glass on its own. Chenin for me cries out for oriental dishes and particularly chicken. Alida Ryder’s Easy Tuscan Roast Chicken is a great pairing. Click here for her recipe.
