Douglas Green was clearly a man of vision for his time, and his philosophies and wine practices continue well into the 76th anniversary of the founding of his eponymous wine company in 1942. His aim was simple. Good quality wine, reflecting the grape from which is made, to be sold at even handed prices to his many loyal followers. As a graduate of Stellenbosch University, he knew the vineyard of the Cape and where to find those special parcels for which the Douglas Green Team of 2018 looks. The Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2018 is a perfect example of all that the name Douglas Green stands.
The grapes for the Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2018 come from the Wellington and Breedekloof Appellations. In the midst of the worst drought in living memory in the western Cape, growers were able to produce fine quality grapes, though the bunches were lighter and the berries smaller, perfect for a high skin to juice ratio and therefore maximum flavour in the final wine. The two grape parcels were vinified separately under the supervision of the Douglas Green Oenologist in cellars within their appellations. Half of the juice contained some fruit, adding richness and mouthfeel to the wine. The wines were brought to the Douglas Green Cellars in Wellington for final blending and bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle under screw cap. The label is an amusing etching of Douglas Green in his old truck in a vineyard. In the glass, it is a clear bright straw with youthful lime green flashes. Fabulous aromas and tastes of Guava, desiccated pineapple, fynbos honey and white flowers. From entry through to the long and slowly disappearing aftertaste, there is a golden thread of acidity. A generosity of perfectly balanced flavours end in a lovely citrus crispness. Will only improve of cool cellared for a couple of years.
This is an ‘any time’ refresher, perfect as a sundown sipper, an aperitif leading into a meal. I always think Chenin and Chicken are great as partners. However, there are times when an utterly delicious midweek supper dish or a Saturday Lunch, calls for something like the Douglas Green Chenin Blanc 2018.
