The Delaire Graff Wine Estate is situated on the top of the Helshoogte Pass in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. It looks down on the Banghoek Valley, and the West and East facing sides of the majestic Simonsberg. Morné Vrey, the Estate’s Award-Winning Winemaker, has produced a real gem here. Following a dry summer, the number of bunches per vine are smaller as were the berries. More skin to juice, the grapes showed good acidity and balanced sugar delivering well concentrated and structured wines.
Picked from the Estate’s own vineyards, the grapes were given gentle treatment in the press. The juice was fermented and then the wine was left on its primary lees post fermentation. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label has the typical style and elegance one gets from Delaire Graff. In the glass, the wine is a buttery yellow. The aromas are of windfall citrus, white fleshed peaches, the oak and its concomitant spice and vanilla. The palate repeats the aromas, rich and generous, a wonderful acid line, and an undertow of minerals in the long and gently waning aftertaste.
Delaire Graff Estate Banghoek Reserve Chardonnay 2020 is a food wine and you will find great matches on the Delaire Graff Restaurant and Indochine menus. On the Estate, beautiful dishes being created currently with a Japanese theme by Virgil Kahn for September, one of his courses is a Sous Vide Beef Sirloin, unagi, turnip, chawanmushi, pickles. Lots on offer.
