De Wetshof Riesling 2017

De Wetshof Wine Estate is situated in the beautiful Robertson Wine Appellation, the valley of fine horses, fine roses, and fine wine. The De Wet Family are Chardonnay specialists and certainly not slouches when it comes to other noble varieties. Jancis Robinson, the well-known British wine writer refers to Riesling along the lines of, that it is the best wine grape in the world. I am on her side.

Peter de Wet, the family’s Winemaker

On De Wetshof, the 1.53 hectare block of Riesling Vines was planted in 2001. Numbered Vineyard Block 22, the vines now mature and producing fine quality grapes. Once harvested in the early hours of the day before the Summer heat rises in the vineyards, the grapes are received by Peter de Wet in the cellar where they are destalked and crushed. The juice that runs off is allowed to cool settle before being taken to stainless steel tanks and the fermentation process begins. Once that process is over, the wine is racked off the gross lees and allowed to mature further on the fine lees. The wine is then prepared for bottling.

Riesling grapes ripening on the vine

From a bottle called The Alsatian Flute, closed with a screw cap. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a pale lemony hay colour. The aromas are unique to this wine. Gentle terpene aromas, minerals, grapefruit, and other ripe yellow fruits. The palate has a wonderful soft acidity line, with rich and generous fruit, spiced, mineral with a fullness of lanolin wax. A truly impressive glass…..

Michael’s Apple & Fennel Salad

While there is great interest to be found from sipping this wine, food is its perfect partner. Sushi, Sashimi, Ceviche, seared tuna, and even a roast pork belly with crispy crackling and baked apples are excellent matches. My Apple and Fennel Salad, simply layers of thinly sliced apple and fennel with rockets, toasted seeds and a good salad dressing we certainly enjoyed with the Riesling.
