Summer is here, and though Rosé is brilliant in Winter with the right food. Summer is the perfect time for a fine Rosé, and the De Grendel Rosé 2019 is just such a wine.
Made from Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal measure, with the grapes grown specifically to make the De Grendel Rosé 2019 – and this is the way Founding Winemaker does is and this is the right way to do it. The well drained, weathered shale soil, vineyards are only irrigated when they are under stress and produce about 12 tons per hectare. The grapes are hand harvested and once destalked and crushed Charles and his team allow a couple of hours of on skin soaking to lift just the correct amount of colour from the skins. Once pressed the juice is allowed to cold settle and the it is racked into stainless steel tanks for fermentation in much the same style as a white wine. Once fermented the wine is prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is classic De Grendel, simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is gem bright and a pale rose gold in colour. The aromas are of delicious wild strawberries and pomegranate arils. The palate is generous with the fruit of the Pinotage and the gravitas in terms of structure and a fine acidity given by the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is ready for drinking now, dry, fresh and crisp, and through the summer.
The De Grendel Rosé 2019 should be served chilled. It is a great summer sipper and just perfect with summery foods. Nina Timm’s Portuguese Sardines with Spring Herbs is a perfect match. Click here for her recipe and to browse her My Easy Cooking website.
