Constantia Royale Don’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021, so good with Coronation Chicken…

Constantia Royale Don’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Today, May 5th, is International Sauvignon Blanc Day. Appropriate that I celebrate it with a truly fine wine like this. Nova Zonnestraal, the home of Constantia Royale, is situated in an ideal position in the Constantia Wine Appellation. In a little valley of its own, nestled up against Wynberg Hill on the Eastern side. A 17-hectare vineyard is planted in mainly granitic soils with clay. This produces a good balance between the greener flavours for which Sauvignon Blanc is known and the tropical fruits for which it is equally fabled. The grapes used for this wine come from part of it’s only East facing block – certainly a single vineyard wine.

Roger Burton, Constantia Royale Winemaker

Roger Burton, the winemaker, ages the wine in first and second fill French Oak Barrels which adds much to the mid palate of the wine.

The late Don Rowand

It also echoes the tastes of the late Don Rowand, who enjoyed the way the Bordelaise treat their Sauvignon Blancs. There is no Semillon blended in as the Sauvignon of 2021 just sang!

Coronation Chicken

Pair
With the celebration of International Sauvignon Blanc Day and the Coronation tomorrow of King Charles 111 and Queen Camilla, I thought it appropriate to give you my version of Coronation Chicken, created for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11, It was a dish created by my Cordon Bleu Cookery Teacher in London, Rosemary Hume. It is a perfect match to the Constantia Royale Don’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021. Click HERE for  my recipe.
