Some clever clogs put up a page indicating a wine for each of the days for the Corona Virus Lockdown. Today’s wine is Pinotage, a truly South African wine grape.
Harvested by hand from a prized 43-year-old bush vine vineyard, planted on decomposed granite soils. Fermented in open French oak barrels with daily punch-downs. After malolactic fermentation in barrels, 50% of the wine was matured in new French oak and 50% in second fill barrels for a period of 12 months.
The Bellingham The Bernard Series Bush Vine Pinotage 2017 is a deep opaque bloodplum in colour, the aromas and generous palate run one into the other with red and black cherries and berries. Christmas pudding. Smoked beef. A brilliant thread of acidity from entry to the long refreshing aftertaste. As good with the Traditional Sunday Roast Lunch with crispy, rustly potatoes and real gravy [very important, real gravy] as it is with a well-prepared mid-week supper dish.
