Anthonij Rupert Wyne launches maiden vintage L’Ormarins Private Cuvée Cap Classique 2014…

L’Ormarins Private Cuvée Cap Classique 2014

My earliest recollections of L’Ormarins is  in the late 1970s  when my friend, the late Anthonij Rupert was in the saddle. A man of a vision of the future with a sense of the past. The discovery of Anthonij’s packaging notes and mock-ups was the departure point for realising his dream to produce the Cap Classique range on L’Ormarins Estate.
The L’Ormarins Private Cuvée 2014 is envisioned as the premier wine of the range and an ode to his pioneering spirit, forged with dedication and produced according to the traditional method, this exceptional wine has been a project eight years in the making. Handcrafted to perfection, it embodies understated elegance, sophistication and beauty. The exquisite bottle, showcases the craftsmanship of internationally acclaimed designer and artist, Mark Eisen.

Mark Eisen – well known American South African Designer

Grapes from the cool climate Altima Estate, the classical Champagne varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are used in the making of this fine wine. Using the first top quality juice, the Tête du Cuvée, from whole bunch pressing, the wine is then fermented with a second fermentation in the bottle. It has 6 years on its lees before being disgorged, to spend another 6 months on the cork before being released.

The packaging is quite exceptional, a beautiful bottle, elegantly labelled and packed in its own box. A pale amber pink in the glass with the mass of tiny bubbles rushing to the surface to form a crown around the edges. The aromas are of fresh baked brioche with raspberry and red currant fruits, and rip white peaches.  The entry in to the palate is zippy with the inevitable fresh citrus and lemon preserve on toasted sourdough. Elegant, top notch stuff.
