Alvi’s Drift 221 Chenin Blanc 2019

Alvi’s Drift is a family owned and managed mixed agricultural Estate situated in the Breede River valley is a 7000 tonne winery in the Breede River Valley. The winery is owned and operated by the Van Der Merwe family. Founded by the late Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe in the 1920s, his son Bertie Van Der Merwe operates the farm along with his 2 sons, the third generation Johan a lawyer, and Alvi, a medical doctor who has been on the property for many years. Alvi’s Drift is the name of the drift near the farm, crossing the Breede river. The Drift was built by Alvi’s grandfather in 1928. Amongst the vastness of this Estate there are 410 hectares of vineyards, the source of the grapes for the Wines. The 221 in the name is the number of the selection of Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe to the Springbok Rugby Team. He went on at 19 to score the first try against New Zealand on South African Soil.
