Ulumbaza Red of Springfontein 2017

Tariro Masayiti, is the Award-Winning Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer of Springfontein Wines, situated near Stanford in the Walker Bay Wine Appellation. Dr Hildegard Witbooi is the Vineyardist and Horticulturalist on the Estate and is married to Tariro.

Ulumbaza is a range of wines which are modern, eminently drinkable and utterly delicious. The Ulumbaza Red of Springfontein 2017 is a wine which could be referred to as a Cape Blend as it contains the correct percentage of Pinotage required for it to have this name. The blend is made up of 42% Pinotage, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Shiraz, and 8% Petit Verdot. Separately vinified for later blending the different varieties underwent fermentation in open top fermenters with regular manual punch downs to gentle extract aromas, flavours, colours and tannins. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel and then the wines were matured in 2nd and third fill French oak barrels. The wines were then blended, and the result prepared for bottling,

The Springfontein Cellar

From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a bright blue screw cap, The label is simple with an enchanting cartoon and the blue repeated in a strip across the bottom. In the glass, the wine is a deep bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of red and black berry fruits and soft sappy plums. There is an undertow of the oak spice and vanilla. The palate is medium bodied with a lovely line of raspberry acidity running through the rich generously fruited mid-palate into the long and gently waning aftertaste. Soft tannins in the ending with fynbos herbaceousness. Eminently drinkable now.

The Ulumbaza Red of Springfontein 2017, lightly chilled is a great glass on its own. Made for food, it likes the sweet-sour foods we South Africans enjoy eating. A fruity lamb curry or some spicy sausage off the braai, dipped frequently in a marinade and developing a good tangy bark on it.

Ulumbaza White of Springfontein 2017

The white partner to this wine is the Ulumbaza White of Springfontein 2017 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc 32.5%, Semillon 22.5%, Interestingly Pinotage 22.5%, and Chardonnay 22.5%. The wine is medium weight, with layer upon layer of fruity whiffs.  Crisp and fresh with the expected mélange of Chardonnay Citrus, grassy Sauvignon Blanc, melon flavoured Semillon and the lovely floral and red fruit notes of the Pinotage. Long aftertaste, with saline kelp and mineral notes. Perfect with a summery salady lunch.
