We are blessed with great wines, great winemakers, great places, fabulous restaurants and family friendly places in our Cape Winelands. Recently I have had the opportunity to taste some sublime wines from various of our friends. One that I so enjoyed was the Landskroon UnWooded Chardonnay 2019, an unwooded version. These are currently so popular. Where the fruit comes from mature vines and the wine needs no platform on which to perform.
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed under screw cap. The label, designed by Anthony Lane, is minimalist and elegant – though as they say ‘watch this space’ as the Estate in is on process of moving to a new label. In the glass, the wine is a pale golden straw. The aromas are classic mature Chardonnay whiffs. A combination of citrus, sweet tropical limes, melon and the creamy flavour of mango. There is a lovely thread of zesty acidity running through the wine from entry, through the generous mid palate and into the long and gently waning dry finishing aftertaste. Lovely glass. Ready to drink now and, if cool cellared will reward in a couple of years.
Not a quaffer, more a sipper as a mid-morning refresher or at sundown. The Landskroon UnWooded Chardonnay 2019 is a lovely late summer food wine. Dianne Bibby’s Prosciutto, Strawberry & Feta Salad is a perfect match for the Landskroon UnWooded Chardonnay 2018. Click HERE for her recipe.
