TOKARA Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 for a sense of Stellenbosch Banghoek place…

TOKARA Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

In a media release I received from from Tokara this week,  a new release…

TOKARA’s forward thinking vision for Cabernet Sauvignon over more than 20 vintages, has seen its vineyards on the foothills of the Simonsberg consistently produce exceptional, award winning wines.

Tokara Vineyards & Olive Groves

The latest release from this family owned Stellenbosch wine estate, TOKARA Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, is no exception. The wine won international acclaim with a gold medal at the 2020 Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, the annual tasting of one of the definitive wine guides in France.

A blend of the diverse vineyard sites on the estate, it is the quintessential expression of TOKARA terroir.

Stuart Botha, Tokara Winemaker

“Cabernet Sauvignon is TOKARA’s original focus variety and our Stellenbosch vineyards produce three singular expressions, a blend of different Cabernet Sauvignon sites on the TOKARA farm, a Reserve single vineyard wine and a pinnacle cuvée. These wines are true renditions of their terroir and everything our estate stands for – refinement, elegance and balance,” says winemaker Stuart Botha.

My thoughts –

Beautiful, simple, Bordeaux Bottle packaging, closed with a crew cap. Elegant white label. In the glass a rich bloodplum read at the heart which pales to ruby garnet as the rim. Aromas are classical Cabernet, blackcurrants and tart red berries. The palate has, from entry a line of fruit acidity and well-integrated tannins which run through to the long aftertaste. The palate is rich and generous with bright fruit with well applied oak and its concomitant spice and vanilla.

The TOKARA Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a versatile wine. Certainly, excellent as a glass on its own for moments of quiet reflection. As a food wine, it is superb. It works well with everything from seared tuna with an Asian Dipping Sauce, to anything red meat off the braai, from under the grill, out of the oven, or the pan.
