Three Ships Whisky launched the 5th limited edition Master’s Collection release – a superb 11-Year-Old Single Malt Shiraz Cask Finish – towards the end of last year. Master Distiller Andy Watts says, ‘To achieve the exceptional cask finish that is the mark of this Master’s Collection, the latest release was first matured for eight years in American oak barrels, before being finished in seasoned Shiraz oak casks for three years.’
From a bespoke bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is classical Three Ships, simple elegant and descriptive. I was taught by a whisky guru that the best way to taste whisky is to add a splash of cold mineral water to it. This allows it to bloom and give forth its aromas and flavours. In the glass it is a beautiful pale amber gold. The aromas are of steamed dried fruit pudding, cherries and toasted hazelnuts. Windfall oranges and some smoke from the oak fill out the aromas. From entry the whisky is elegantly spiced, and red berry fruited from the previous fill oak casks. That lovely peaty undertow in the satisfying mouthfeel is very beguiling. Lovely ending with great layers and complexity. The strength of 51.4% alcohol by volume.
Andy Watts concludes ‘This collectible release is a fine example of how South African whisky ingenuity is revolutionizing the whisky category. It celebrates the tenacity of the dedicated team at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, where this premium whisky range is produced.’
