Wellington is a Wine Appellation producing wines of great stature. Wine lovers get great quality wines at even handed prices. As the French say “bon rapport qualité-prix.” One or two of the red wines from the La Cave Range produced by Wellington Wines also took some impressive Gold and Double Gold Awards.
Duke Chenin Blanc 2022
Grapes from selected vineyards and sometimes even specific parts of a block are taken to the cellar when at ideal ripeness and are destalked and crushed. The free run juice that comes out of the press is used for the cool fermentation process. The wine was then kept on it fine less for two months to build mouthfeel. In the glass, the wine is a pale straw colour. The aromas and palate segue one into the other with granadilla, apricots, desiccated pineapple, honeydew melon, honey and white flowers. The palate is rich and generous with a bright line if acidity running through form entry to the long aftertaste.

Duke Sauvignon Blanc 2022
The grapes came from cooler south facing vineyards. The winemaking was much the same as for the Chenin Blanc. In the glass the wine is a pale coloured straw. Beguiling aromas of cape gooseberries, granadilla, white fleshed peaches and a fynbos herbaceousness are met at entry by a crisp acidity. Harmony is the word, medium of weight, refreshing with a kelp salinity and an undertow of elderflowers and sweet tropical limes in the long and gently waning aftertaste.
