On the “Sunday last before Advent” there is a prayer in the Anglican Church Prayer book which begins, “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord…”
Little silver charms for stirring into the pudding
I remember as a little boy helping my grandmother make the puddings. All the steaming bowls were set out. Tickeys and little silver charms were boiled in a small saucepan to sterilise them.
There were all sorts of traditions, butter should be really sift and easy to beat, like stir only clockwise, look away while grandpa pours in the brandy – always too much.
They were then boiled and put into the fridge until Christmas morning.

A perfect wine match would be something deliciously sweet, possibly a fortified Muscadel or a Jerepigo.
