Appropriate that I should be writing about this wine as International Shiraz Day falls on 22nd. I always say, if you want to know what a grape tastes like, the Signature Series is where you go. The grapes for the Spier Signature Series Shiraz 2019 are a mix of grapes from four different Wine Appellations, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Breedekloof and Swartland. Once in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and crushed and taken to stainless steel tanks for fermentation, 20% was taken to neutral barrels and the balance to tanks with French oak staves for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 12 months. The wine is then blended and prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is simple and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a vibrant dark plum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are classical Shiraz, blackberries, Parma Violets. These segue into the rich, medium bodied and generously fruited palate where fine tannins, and the oak with its concomitant spice and vanilla, meld with a counterbalancing acidity in a long and gently waning aftertaste. A delicious glass, ready for now drinking, though a couple of years of cool cellaring will reward you.
The Spier Signature Series Shiraz 2019 is perfect as a sipper while you wait for the braai embers to come to the right temperature, or the casserole meat to become tender. Good with spicy foods, a good sausage, a tomato based casserole or a fine roast duck with a fruity sauce. Meeta K Wolff’s Orange Marmalade and Port Glazed Duck with a Parsnip Pumpkin Truffle Butter Mash (Click Here) is the bomb and will do great honour to the duck.
And, just in from Scout PR and Social Media. is the news that The Spier 21 Gables Pinotage 2017 received a Grand Gold from the internationally acclaimed Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, with each of the other wines in the 21 Gables range receiving Gold medals. In addition, the recently announced Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) appraised more than 18,000 wines from 56 countries and awarded 2 Gold and 15 Silver to Spier’s portfolio. These international results affirm the 21 Gables wines awarded lineage.
