Spier Signature Series Pinotage 2019
Spier Wine Farm is a premier Tourist Destination situated in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. Cellar Master Johan Jordaan and his team make several wine ranges using grapes from the Estate and other Wine Appellations.

For me, each of the varietal wines in the Signature Range are an excellent benchmark for the flavours and aromas you fine in the varietal wine grapes. The Spier Signature Series Pinotage 2019 is one of these wines. The grapes come from the Darling, Durbanville and Paarl Wine Appellations. Elevation in the cellar is as usual for a red wine, though the use of cultured and natural yeast helps to unlock the fragrant fruit profile of the grapes. After fermentation, 20% of the wine was matured in French-oak barrels for 8 to 10 months; the remainder matured in stainless-steel tanks with oak staves, which of course are made from French Oak. The result if the same though of course far more economical than using barrels, which presently come at eyewatering prices. The different components are then blended and prepared for bottling.
A generosity of Pinotage on the vine
Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is in line with the rest of the range and is elegant and simple. In the glass, the wine is a bloodplum red at the heat which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are typical Pinotage, well spiced, red and black berries and cherries and oak and its vanilla. The palate has a lovely acidity line, It is rich and generous with a polished midpalate and a long and gently waning and very satisfying aftertaste. An impressive glass and well priced. Made for ‘now’ driking, though will reward you after a year or so of cool cellaring.

One of the beauties of the Spier Signature Series Pinotage 2019 is that it is an excellent sipping wine while you wait for a couple of thick lamb chops to cook to perfection on the braai.
