Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2019,excellent partner to Nina Timm’s Crispiest Sesame Chicken Strips
Oldenburg Vineyards is situated in a cool part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation in the Banghoek Valley. Here the mighty Simonsberg faces the sunrise. The Oldenburg Team believes that great wines can only come from the best quality grapes. The intervention in the vineyards is minimal, to reflect the full potential of this mountain terroir. The Oldenburg Vineyards Series is a true expression of terroir through its range of single cultivar wines. The confluence of the 8 Natural Elements that determine the Estate’s unique terroir is explored through these wines and their real sense of place. The grapes came from a single 13-year-old vineyard. Picked in the early morning, cooled overnight in a cold room and then crushed, destemmed and pressed the following day. The juice was settled overnight then racked to barrels for spontaneous/wild fermentation. The barrels were rolled once per week to stir up the lees. In total 20% of the wine was created in new oak barrels and 80% was matured in older fill barrels. After 10 months in both 225l and 300l oak barrels the wine was racked to tanks and prepared for bottling.
The Estate has limited stocks of the 2019 vintage, this will be followed by the 2020.
Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label depicts the 8 Natural Elements that determine the Estate’s unique terroir. In the glass, the wine is a pale lemon straw in colour. The aromas are of lemony, limey citrus with sweet brown spices. The appear on entry where they meld with winter melon, Granny Smith apples, honey and white flowers. The palate is rich and generous, finely balanced with the fruit, the acidity line and the oak all in perfect harmony. Impressive glass, finely wooded. Made for now drinking, it will reward you after a year or two of cool cellaring.
