Spier Signature Series Pinotage 2019

Johan Jordaan, much awarded Spier Wine Maker

I am often asked by wine novices “what does it taste like.” When it comes to single variety wines, the Spier Signature Series is the place to go. Especially with South Africa’s own Pinotage. Johan Jordaan of the Spier cellar Team made this wine using grapes from three different Wine Appellations, Darling, Durbanville and Paarl. The vineyards are between 20 and 22 years old, planted in a mix of decomposed granite and weathered and stone.  Where the clay subsoils do not hold water, the vineyards are given supplementary irrigation where necessary to assist with the growth of the leaf cover and even ripening. Once in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed and crushed and taken to stainless steel fermentation tanks with natural and cultured yeasts.  Once fermented, 20% of the wine was matured in French Oak Barrels and the remainder in Stainless Steel Tanks with French Oak Staves. The wine was then prepared for bottling.

From a Bordeaux shaped Bottle, closed with a screw cap. The label is minimalist and elegant. In the glass, the wine is a deep bloodplum colour at the heart which pales out to a purple tinged ruby at the edges. The aromas are classical Pinotage. Black and red cherries and berries. With an undertow of oak spice and vanilla. The wine flows gently over the palate, is evenly balanced and harmonious. Long ending.

The Spier Signature Series Pinotage 2019 is so good as a sipping wine while waiting for the braai coals to reach temperature. As a food wine, it works very well with dishes of a South African Nature. So, a good boerewors off the braai, a dish of Tomato Bredie or a tranche of grilled Venison. With the traditional hunting season upon us, many of our friends will go hunting and we will get a little prize cut or two.
