The Spier Creative Block 3 2017 is a blend of 93% Shiraz, 4% Mourvèdre, and 3% Viognier. The grapes come from Groenekloof in Darling and Stellenbosch and were harvested by hand. Each variety was separately vinified by Johan Jordaan and his cellar team to address each variety’s need for undivided attention and to ensure that the unique varietal characteristics and site expression were completely developed before blending.
Once de-stemmed the grapes were taken to stainless-steel tanks for a 14-day period of fermentation. Free run wine was racked to barrel for malolactic fermentation and maturation in 90% French and 10% American oak 300L barrels (half first fill, half second fill), for 16 months. The expert blending of this Rhône-style blend has ensured harmony between the three varieties and the ultimate balance between fruit, palate volume, oak extract and tannins. Selective tasting from the barrels determined the composition of the blend. The final blended wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is simple and elegant and there is an engraving of the words 1692 Spier on the bottle below the label. In the glass the wine is a deep bloodplum at the heart which pales out to ruby at the edges. The aromas are so typical of wine made from these varieties. Note of red berries and ripe prune plums and oak spice with its vanilla. The palate from entry has a lovely line of raspberry acidity and silken tannins going through into the long aftertaste. The mid palate is rich and generous with complex and layered fruits. An impressive glass now thought the wine could do with a couple of years of cool cellaring.
The Spier Creative Block 3 2017 is such a food wine. Will handle a roast pork belly of venison fillet and even a curry from Kerala where the spices are gentle and fruity rather then hot. Lizet Hartley’s Herbed Mushrooms on Cheesy Polenta is just the job. Click HERE for her recipe.
