Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2022, good with a gentle curry or a tranche of Dalewood Fromage Wineland Brie Green Fig…

Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2022

Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation is owned and managed by the Malan Family, now into its third generation.  Founder Frans Malan was a busy man, brain always working and creating. In 1973, he planted Gewürztraminer on his Estate. It was the first cellar to release a Gewürztraminer in South Africa. On the 1977 Young Wine Show in Stellenbosch, it took and Award and Simonsig has built a highly successful track record with Gewürztraminer. A notoriously difficult variety to grow and its small bunches and extremely low yield explains why there are only 122 hectares in South Africa. Gewürz means spice in German and Tramin is a town in the Trentino Alto Adige region of Northern Italy.

A South African Special Late Harvest certified wine requires the grapes to be harvested at a minimum of 22 degrees Balling. If however, the residual sugar of the wine is below 20g/l, the label must state Extra-dry, Dry, Semi-dry or sweet according to the levels specified in legislation.

Elevated in the Cellar in the same way as making a white wine, the Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2022, is a delicate golden straw colour in the glass. The aromas are totally beguiling. Brilliant whiffs of aromatic white flowers, frangipane, honeysuckle and orange blossom.  The palate is rich and oily, filled with tropical and semi tropical fruits like litchi, and desiccated pineapple. The aftertaste is long rides off gently into the sunset. The wine will reward after 4 to 6 years of col cellaring.

Pair

The Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2022 is a wine for gentle sipping. It is also excellent with food. A good gentle Kerala Vegetable Curry. Dalewood Fromage Wineland Brie Green Fig is a great partner.
