Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2020, excellent with cheese like the Dalewood Fromage Simond or a mild creamy vegetable curry…

Simonsig Gewürztraminer 2020

Simonsig Wine Estate in the Western part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation has been owned and managed by the Malan Family for three generations.

Frans Malan – Stellenbosch Wine Pioneer

My first memories of this wine are such happy ones. Frans Malan planted the first Gewürztraminer on the Estate in 1973. He made the first wine from these vines in 1977. The wine took an award at the Stellenbosch Young Wine Show that year.

Gewürztraminer Grapes ripening on the vine

A British wine writer once said something like, difficult to spell, difficult to pronounce and oh so easy to recognise. This is officially nominated as a Special Late Harvest Wine, so it has a level of sweetness. With all that is going on, the wonderful aromas, the fruit, the Spice, the Turkish delight, the white guavas, the pink roses, and the brilliant line of acidity which ameliorates the residual sugar. A truly special wine, and one which will age for 4 to 6 years and simply become more appealing.

Dalewood Fromage Simond

Pair

Packed in a bottle shape called the Alsatian Flute, Gewürztraminer is big in Alsace, elegant simple label. Very good as a glass on its own, perhaps with a splash of soda and ice. Brilliant as a food wine – excellent with a mild creamy vegetable curry. Or with some mild oily cheese like Pecorino or the Dalewood Fromage Boland or Simond.
