Simonsig going back any number of years has been a wine estate led by pioneers. The late Frans Malan, father of Johan and Francois who currently own and manage this well-known Estate in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, and continue their father’s tradition of fine wine. The first estate bottled Chenin Blanc, the first Estate bottle Pinotage, the very first Champagne style wine, Kaapse Vonkel, now commonly known as Méthode Cap Classique. The Simonsig Woolworths Chenin Blanc Pinotage 2019 is simply a great extension to the brand all wrapped up in a delicious wine. It is available at all Woolworths Wine Departments.
The Chenin Blanc [70%] and the Pinotage [30%] grapes are hand harvested from specially selected vineyard blocks which provide the kind of fruit for this style of wine. Once in the cellar, they are separately vinified which allows options for the final blending stage. The grapes are destemmed and gently crushed and after a gentle pressing, the juice runs free and is then cool and clear settled. Cool fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks with the Pinotage component being treated as a white wine. The wines are then skillfully blended, and the wine is prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped clear glass bottle, closed with a pale gold screw cap. The label simple and elegant Simonsig. In the glass, the wine is a pale pink gold. The aromas are those of bright fruits, strawberries, ripe green melon. The palate is generous, well fruited in the mid-section with a crisp thread of fruit acidity running through from entry to the long and satisfying and refreshing aftertaste. A delicious Summer glass. The wine is made for now drinking, though with cool cellaring of a year or two you will be rewarded with broader flavours.
A wine like the Simonsig Woolworths Chenin Blanc Pinotage 2019 is an any time wine, served well chilled and perfect as a mid-morning refresher or a sundown sipper. Works well with Sushi and Sashimi. Summer salads with smoked chicken or fish are good partners too. Dianne Bibby’s Giant Couscous Salad with Peas, Smoked Bacon & Parmesan is a brilliant lunchtime option. If you have not tried giant couscous before, now is your chance. It is delicious and at times known as Israeli Couscous, a pasta rolled into tiny balls. Click HERE for Dianne’s recipe.
