Peter Falke Wines has its home on Groenvlei Farm in the foothills of the Helderberg in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. An excellent address if you are in the wine business. The cooling breezes off False Bay ameliorate the summer heat in the vineyards and allow for longer hang time on the vine which results in fuller flavours and more complexity in the final wine. The Peter Falke PF Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is a wine that benefits enormously from its altitude, its aspect and the soil on which it is planted.
Werner Schrenk, the Estate’s GM, and his team do excellent work in the vineyard. Bunch selection at harvest ensures that all raisined, sunburned or rotting grapes are not taken into the cellar and into the wine making process. Once hand harvested and, in the cellar, another selection is done before destalking and crushing. Once in the press, the mash lay for 6 hours of skin contact in order to extract as much flavour as possible. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was racked off its gross lees and left on the fine lees for a further 2 to 3 months. This builds excellent flavour in the wine before it is prepared for bottling.
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle under natural cork. The livery is elegant and simple with silver foiling. In the glass, it is gem bright and a pale golden straw in colour. The tropical and citrus fruits are found on the nose and from entry the palate is swirled with tart granadilla and grapefruit. There is an undertow of Lemon Balm and Lemon Grass as the herbaceous notes. The aftertaste is long and refreshing, wanes slowly and begs you to take another sip.
Excellent as a refresher mid-morning, or as an aperitif before a meal. Perfect sundowner wine. The Peter Falke PF Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is a great food partner with crunchy green summery saladings. It works well with a tranche of SASSI friendly fish like hake, cooked with lemon, butter and herbs in a pan. Tracy Foulkes, NOMU Food Founder and Chef has a fabulous salad which she makes with Roasted Egyptian Dukkah Spiced Aubergines with Goats Feta, Mint & Pomegranate Seeds. Click here for her recipe.
