Oldenburg Vineyards is situated in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation in the cool Banghoek Valley, midst Alpine-like mountains with a charming little hillock in the centre called Rondekop. At Oldenburg Vineyards, the belief is that that great wines can only come from the best quality grapes. Intervention in the vineyards is minimal, to reflect the full potential of this mountain terroir. The Oldenburg Vineyards Series is a true expression of terroir through their range of single variety wines.
The grapes for the Oldenburg Vineyards Series Chardonnay 2020 were sourced from two vineyard blocks, planted on alluvial soil, and weathered Table Mountain sandstone. Bunches were hand-sorted and whole bunch pressed in a pneumatic press, on a gentle Champagne cycle. Juice settled overnight before being racked to 228 litre French Oak Barrels. Natural fermentation completed within 2 months, and partial malolactic conversion allowed on some barrels. After maturing for 10 months, the wine was gently fined and filtered in preparation for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is quirky, displaying the 8 natural elements which go into the sublime wines of the estate. In the glass, the colour is a pale wheaten gold. The Aromas virtually jump out of the glass and are benchmark Chardonnay, white fleshed peaches, apricots and melon, and roasted hazelnuts. The palate, from entry, has a fine line of lime acidity which runs through to the long and lingering aftertaste. The mid plate is rich and generous with poached deciduous fruits, sweet tropical limes, ginger juice and the spice and vanilla imparted by the Oak Barrels. An impressive glass. This wine will continue to reward you for a good many years with cool cellaring.
The Oldenburg Vineyards Series Chardonnay 2020 is a wine made for food. I always think that a plain butter roasted organic chicken is the perfect partner. There are any number of ‘perfect roast chicken’ recipes, though I do find that Alida Ryder’s Easy Lemon Roasted Chicken was almost created for this wine. Click HERE for her recipe.
