Oldenburg Vineyards is uniquely positioned up on the top of the Banghoek Valley, a position cooler than that of the rest of the Appellation on the west facing side of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The philosophy of great wines come from great grapes is showing up seriously in the wines, particularly those of the Vineyard Series where the 8 natural elements determine the Estate’s unique terroir which shines through in the wines, giving them a sense of place. If you have a sense of place, your wine has a story and the Oldenburg story is a genuine and interesting one. The Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chenin Blanc 2018 is a fine example of the place and seriousness of the wines from the Banghoek Valley.
The grapes for the Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chenin Blanc 2018 are hand harvested, with initial pinch sorting taken place in the vineyard and then further bunch and berry sorting in the cellar, allowing only the finest grapes to go through to the winemaking processes, carefully guided by Oldenburg’s Winemaker, Nic van Aarde. The wine was fermented in a combination of egg and older barrels, and matured in 300l French oak barrels, of which 17% were first fill for 8 months. The wine was then prepared for bottling.
From a Burgundy shaped bottle, closed with a superior screw cap. The label is a simple elegant one, portraying the 8 natural element discussed above. In the glass, it is a pale wheaten gold, gem bright. The aromas are of fresh sliced Golden Delicious apples, sweet tropical limes, desiccated pineapple and the oak and its concomitant sweet brown spice and vanilla. On the palate the wonderful fruit acidity runs through with the layers of fruit elements into a generous middle palate and down to the long and satisfying aftertaste with its undertow of ripe stone fruit. While the wine is eminently drinkable now, it will happily reward you after some cool cellaring as it develops over the next 5 years.
The Oldenburg Vineyard Series Chenin Blanc 2018 is a serious wine as a sipper. Don’t serve it too cold in order that it shows itself as its best. For me Chenin Blanc is a wine which goes with almost any food, though for me, The Butter Roast Organic Chicken is as close to being the finest match. Alida Ryder’s Hawaiian Chicken Skewers are a delicious match. Click HERE to see the recipe and to view her website.
